Projects

Ericka Sherod, 2008-2009 President

Annual BBQ festival format changed to BBQ 'n Music to appeal to a wider audience. Profits from the festival go to support community and international humanitarian service projects.
$65,000 was donated toward the following groups or projects:
  • The Daily YMCA
  • Bixby Community Outreach Center
  • Water wells in Nicaragua
  • Medical supplies in developing countries
  • School/youth programs
  • Parks improvements
  • Miscellaneous grants
3rd Grade Dictionary Project – as a way of developing literacy at a critical age, each 3rd grader in the Bixby school system and surrounding schools is given a dictionary for their personal use.
Scholarships – $8000 in scholarships granted.
Rotary Youth Leadership Academy – sponsorship of 4 high school students.
Outbound exchange student – sponsorship of 1 student in Chile.
Inbound exchange student – sponsorship of 1 student from Germany.
Choices – we initiated and taught a program aimed at helping 8th graders make choices that will positively impact them for the rest of their lives.
Rotary Interact – Initiated an Interact club within the high school. In this club, students will learn how to operate their own Rotary club within the high school.
Shop With A Cop – a program aimed at helping disadvantaged or at-risk youth develop a positive impression of our local police force. In this program, children from over 55 families were paired up with a local police officer and were allowed to shop for Christmas presents for their family members. Our club donated over $5000 toward the cost of these presents.
Shoes for Orphan Souls – Purchased over 800 pairs of shoes to be given to orphans in foreign countries.
Coins for Kids – a program that allowed up to $5000 to be matched by MidFirst Bank to help sustain our ongoing programs for kids.
A Long Range International Planning Committee was formed for the purpose of identifying and implementing ongoing and expanding opportunities for our local club's humanitarian service projects abroad.
One of those projects includes providing eye glass kits to third world countries. Enthusiastic Rotarians and Rotary representatives delivered eye glass kits to 4 countries, providing them with the ability to make 316 pair of glasses per kit for their communities. Future plans include setting up microenterprises within selected countries.
